Community Book Project
The Johnston County Arts Council is pleased to announce a new project highlighting literary, performing, and visual arts and artists in our community: a premium-color coffee table book titled Johnston County Creates. The book, to be published in Spring 2023, will feature arts organizations, spotlight individual artists, and include a directory of creative resources throughout Johnston County.
Local artists and arts organizations in the fields of culinary, dance, entertainment, fashion, film, music, painting, photography, pottery, theater, writing and more are invited to apply for inclusion in the book. Individual amateur or professional artists 18 years or older, as well as businesses and organizations, may apply for themselves or on behalf of a fellow artist or organization. Those not physically located in the county lines will be asked for their connection to the arts community in Johnston County.
Applications are live online beginning October 25 and ending at midnight November 22, 2022.

Applicants will be asked to identify their arts discipline(s), answer questions, provide an inspirational top-ten list, and upload their best photos/written works. Photos of artists, workspaces, or artworks; illustrations; and poems (36 line max), flash fiction (200 words max) and short stories (1,500 words max)
may be submitted.
Participants will be asked for a non-refundable donation ($15 individual/ $25 organization) through PayPal which guarantees a listing in the resource directory. Selections of features, spotlights, photos, and written works will be made by the Committee for Johnston County Creates.
Donations will be used to match grants to produce the book, which is supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. Proceeds from sales of the published book will fund Johnston County Arts Council programs such as Artists in the Schools.
The book’s editorial team is led by local author and artist Evelyn Wool, arts council Executive Director Darlene Williford, and President Judy Boyette. Editorial staff includes arts council board members Hope Toler Dougherty, Cathy Gutierrez, Joyce Kilpatrick-Jordan, Michelle Fields-Laughinghouse, Peggy Wickham, and Percilla Williams, and Triangle East Writers Cindy Brookshire and Rose Cushing.

The goal of this project is to provide an opportunity for all artists of Johnston County to showcase their creativity, and artists of all backgrounds are encouraged to share their stories. Let the community get to know the creativity in you!
