ARTISTS-IN-THE-SCHOOLS

about artistS-in-the-schools

In our increasingly global society the future belongs to those who can effectively process information. The arts provide a way for children to develop the critical and creative thinking skills they will need to compete in real world situations. Research shows that arts-infused instruction builds parental involvement, encourages self-esteem, instills community values and increases student achievement both in the classroom and on standardized tests.

The Artists-in-the-Schools program is a partnership between the
Johnston County Arts Council and Johnston County Schools. This comprehensive arts in education program is designed to utilize the arts to reinforce and expand basic curriculum through exposure to performances, hands-on workshops, and residencies with professional artists. AITS is available to all schools for the enrichment of the lives of all Johnston County students, grades K-12. The Artists-in-the-Schools program focuses on the arts as a tool for learning and cultural enrichment.

Since its inception in 1999, Artists-in-the-Schools has…
• Funded over 1,500 cultural events for Johnston County Schools
• Placed more than 190 artists from around the world in the schools
• Raised over $1,240,000 for the Artists-in-the-Schools program!

school support

End-of-year evaluations from teachers and principals continually demonstrate the success and need for the Artists-in-the-Schools program. During the 2018-19 school year, 100% of schools reported that they would be unable to offer these cultural events without Artists-in-the-Schools funding. On a scale with 5.0 being “very satisfied,” the Artists-in-the-Schools program received a…

4.9 score on overall program satisfaction
4.7 score on meeting teaching objectives
4.8 score on student learning

**The Johnston County Artists-in-the-Schools Program is modeled on the Artists in the Schools program of the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County and is supported in part by services provided by United Arts.
